A Brighter, Cleaner Future for Our State

IGEL beach tripIn the late 1990s, an advisory committee gathered to come up with a new way to approach environmental issues in Georgia. The idea was to build a collaborative network of knowledgeable leaders, people from all sectors and regions who could create solutions, instead of just engaging in divisive debates and lawsuits.

Their solution was to create and launch IGEL in 2001. In 2004, IGEL, Inc., was formed to act as the program’s governing body. In the years since IGEL began, its classes have grown in attendance and diversity, and the annual programs have expanded to include hands-on learning experiences in every part of Georgia.

Since 2001, hundreds of alumni have completed the training, and include leaders from academia, industry, government and civic organizations. After graduation, alumni have implemented their new skills and training to successfully solve environmental challenges, and called on fellow graduates to confer and collaborate on sustainability issues. Instead of constant conflict, Georgia’s environmentally-aware leaders can now work together to create a brighter, cleaner future for our state.
