This event is designed especially for you to enjoy. Not only will we celebrate IGEL’s fifth anniversary, but we also will celebrate IGEL’s growing network of over 150 alumni. Over the weekend, you will

  • reconnect with your fellow class members,
  • meet new IGEL alumni,
  • get an update on the evolution of the IGEL program,
  • learn about exciting new alumni opportunities and
  • spend a relaxing weekend with your family at Callaway.

IGEL Welcomes Lee M. Thomas as Keynote Speaker
Lee M. ThomasLee M. Thomas is the retired President of and Chief Operating Officer of Georgia-Pacific Corporation. Before he joined Georgia-Pacific, Lee served as chairman and chief executive officer for Law Companies Environmental Group, and prior to that served in a number of governmental roles including Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and leadership positions with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Office of the Governor of South Carolina.

Over the years, Lee has been active in a variety of environmental, industry, and government organizations. He currently serves on the board of directors of the World Resources Institute, the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, the Georgia Environmental Facilities Authority, Airgas, Inc., Rayonier, Inc., Regal Entertainment Group, Resolve, Inc. and is a member of the National Academy of Public Administration. Past honors include the 1988 Conservation Achievement Award from the National Wildlife Federation, the 1991 René Dubos Environmental Award and the 2000 National Conference for Community Justice National Brotherhood Award. In October 2001, he received the Environmental Law Institute Award recognizing his two decades of vision and leadership in environmental law, policy and management. Lee was recently named by Governor Sonny Perdue to Chair the Governor’s Energy Policy Council to oversee the development of the State Energy Strategy for Georgia.
October 13, Friday Schedule

  • 2:00 p.m.: Networking and Information Sharing Opportunities **
  • 5:00: Reception
  • 5:45: Keynote Speaker—Lee Thomas
  • 6:30-8:00: Casual Dinner
    ** A birds of prey demonstration will take place at 3 p.m.
    ** During the Networking and Information Sharing sessions at 2 p.m., we have two available activities—participate in an “IGEL Fair, where alumni can set up tables or posters about the work you or your organization is doing, or join in one of several 45-minute discussion forums with your fellow alumni on a current environmental topic. When registering online, you will have the option to choose which activity you prefer.

October 14, Saturday Schedule

    Available activities from 9:00 a.m.-noon
    • Hike on The Preserve at Callaway Gardens: Explore the 10,000 acre tract of land outside of the Gardens with Callaway’s land stewardship staff. On this 2 mile walk you’ll see long leaf pine restoration, stream bank repair, timber stand management and habitat improvements for wildlife. Learn more about how Callaway manages its land to promote forest health and biodiversity.
    • Tour of Callaway Gardens: Visit the key attractions in the Gardens including the Day Butterfly Center and Sibley Horticultural Center with a Callaway Horticulturist as your guide. We’ll also take a peak behind the scenes and see areas not generally open to the public!
    • Visit FDR State Park with Nathan Claus, Georgia DNR ecologist, and see the recently discovered stand of American chestnut trees.
      October 14-15 is an AutumnFest festival weekend at Callaway Gardens. Beginning at 11 a.m., special music and fall harvest activities (designed for families) are planned around the Gardens.
      Enjoy recreational activities at Callaway Gardens on your own: golf, tennis, shooting, bicycling and fishing. We can provide details to assist individuals in making their own reservations.

    Transportation: If enough interest is shown, chartered bus transportation from Atlanta on Friday afternoon with return trips on Friday night and/or Saturday afternoon will be available. Reduce emissions, save money on gas and share the ride with your fellow IGELians. You will have the option of participating in this alternative transportation when you register online.
    Lodging: IGEL will arrange for a block of rooms for Friday night (10-13-06) at Callaway Gardens. Participants must make their own reservations and will pay for the rooms themselves. Reservations can be made online at [2] www.callawaygardens.com.
    Children: Activities will be available on Friday afternoon for older children, and babysitting services through Callaway Gardens can be arranged for younger children.
